Brian and Hene Hill
The West Coasters in the South Island describe their region as Nature-ally Amazing. Having lived in or visited almost every corner of Aotearoa we can surely say this applies equally to every part of this beautiful land of ours.
Rugged coastlines, majestic mountains, sublime lakes, beautiful waterways and ancient rain forests illustrate so many of Nature’s creations. Nature is the supreme artist – without peer, providing us with all the raw materials we could possibly imagine – or need.
We see our role as artists as easy – Nature has already done the hard work! We are simply messengers – highlighting and exposing that work of Nature to a wider and hopefully appreciative audience. For us, it’s not so much about the carving – it’s about the uniqueness of the stone or timber and the tapestry of grains and colours within. Our work tends to the organic and the contemporary as these forms tend to more readily come to the fore. We believe each unique creation from nature seems to know what it wants to be, reading this intent is the trick – a never ending learning process and a labour of love, no less!
Life is full of journeys and Pounamu, the sacred and magical fish, has taken us on the most amazing journey. As we are able, we will continue to swim alongside. To be able to continue this journey which brings us so much joy and satisfaction - not to mention a living, is a blessing we never take for granted.
